The Monster had been looking forward to sampling Fore Street’s renowned cooking since his last visit to Portland.  Looking in the windows jealousy each time he passed, everything about it screams class and elegance.

But would it prove worthy?

Oh yes, it most certainly would.  Taking a seat at the bar a glass of Pinot noir is ordered as The Monster takes a gander at the menu that changes seasonally. You’ll always find plenty of fresh seafood and game with the preparations matching the time of year.

Wood oven roasted mussels, Casco Bay, garlic, almond butter starts the night off.

Plump mussels, a simple yet wonderful broth, a huge portion.  Winner.

Moulard duck confit, Hudson Valley, roasted salsify, red pak choi, sweet cranberry sauce is the call as the entree.

So utterly satisfying.  So perfect for the season.  So much artistry in the dish.

There is a reason Fore Street is perennially one of the hardest reservations in town. Because they take the best ingredients and let them shine in winning presentations without huge pretension or unnecessary accompaniments.

Because the room is warm and classic and beautiful.

And because the service is top notch.

Why go?  It is one of Portland’s best.
