REVIEW: MATTHEWS HOMESTYLE COOKING

IMG_6636

There are days when the only thing that will do is fried chicken, mac and cheese, collared greens and cornbread.  For The Monster this happens often.  Almost every day often.

So Matthews Homestyle Cooking happened.

REVIEW: LENNY’S DELI

IMG_0638

Matzo ball soup is the perfect cure for whatever ails you.  Medical fact.

The Monster heads over to Lenny’s Deli (in the old Junior’s Deli space) with the intention of getting a large bowl of soup and be cured of his many ills.

REVIEW: PEDDLER’S CREAMERY

IMG_6634

Let’s say you’re in DTLA.  And you want ice cream.  It’s a hot day.  Ice cream is delicious.  You went to the gym in the morning.  Stop judging.

Now let’s say you really dig bicycles.  You ride them everywhere. Yours has a really cool basket.  And tassels on the handle.  Or you hate electricity.  But you really love ice cream.  Enter Peddler’s Creamery.

REVIEW: BRONZED AUSSIE

IMG_0569

G’Day!  As the downtown adventures continue (is their a hotter area in LA save perhaps Venice?) The Monster checks out Bronzed Aussie, a new Australian sweet and savory pie shop/espresso bar.

Located in Santee Alley (you’ll have difficulty finding this little gem from the street), this is the dream of an Australian expat (Samantha Bryan) who missed the popular snack from her home.  Teaming up with Michelin star trained Australian chef, Lincoln Smith, Bronzed Aussie (love the name, more on that later) offers up a well curated menu of pies and Longshot coffee.  With only a few high chairs inside and a table or two outside this is grab and go eating for the most part.

REVEIW: BADMAASH

IMG_6604

Los Angeles desperately needs a cool place to get great Indian food.  A place like they have in London in spades.  Where the hip atmosphere, friendly service and amazing food make you want to hit the spot on a weekend night and not just from your couch/delivery as you watch a rerun on TV.  Much like Night and Market has done for Thai food, LA was clearly lacking just such a spot for Indian.

Until now.  Hello Badmaash!

REVIEW: SEASALT FISH GRILL

IMG_6577

The Monster loves seafood.  This comes as no surprise.  So when Seasalt Fish Grill opens in downtown Santa Monica (from the same folks as Jack & Jill’s next door) a trip to check it out happens posthaste.

It’s a cute little counter-order, with both a downstairs and upstairs seating area.  On this day it’s jam-packed which is a good sign for such a newbie.  Let’s get ready to rumble.

REVIEW: FISHERMAN’S OUTLET

IMG_6617

You want all manner of fish. You want it fried. Chargrilled.  Salmon. Shrimp. Maybe some lobster. Chowder is a must. Also some fries. And slaw.  You want to come in a t-shirt and flip flops and sit at a picnic table and eat from paper plates. And you want it to be delicious.  Oh, and you need, you desperately need buttery, garlicky goodness.

Welcome to the organized chaos that is Fisherman’s Outlet.

REVIEW: HAVEN GASTROPUB

IMG_6547

There are good ideas.  And bad ideas.  And good, bad ideas.  Going to the Pasadena Flea Market resides fittingly under all of the above headings.

Good idea because The Monster goes with friends.  Bad idea because it proves to be 106 degrees Fahrenheit and demonstrates what living on the sun assuredly must be like.  And good, bad idea because it is a swell time but The Monster thinks he may need to be hooked up to an IV and have his electrolytes replenished.  And he might faint.  And the cumulative amount of sweat lost could fill the East Indian Ocean.  But all of this leads to Haven Gastropub…

REVIEW: TINGA SANTA MONICA

IMG_6557

The Monster heads to Tinga Santa Monica.  Can still smell the waft of perfume the eponymous Rene used to wear as she held court in her restaurant/bar/warren.  While the walls have been painted (and the creepy dolls have been replaced by horrific art), not much has really changed in this space.

Which proves both good and bad.
