It’s lunchtime in SF and The Monster has a normal quandary when visiting his mates in the city. He is starved but so, so lazy. Luckily, he has picked his friends wisely as they fall in step with this line of thinking (and live in The Mission where great food is oft just steps away). And so it is that Schmidt’s is the call for brunch.
It’s a spartanly handsome room that only upon closer inspection shows some signs of wear and tear. The menu is all beer and brats and kraut-ish and that sounds just fine.
And so it is. A duck and a chicken apple sausage served with sauerkraut and German potato salad is the call on this day. Hearty, filling food to line the stomach because more shenanigans are in store this evening.
You mighty opt for veal schnitzel on toast with chive sour cream, fried egg, red onion and mixed greens or perhaps marinated herring fillets, smoked trout, house cured gravlax served with bread, onions, capers and a marinated cucumber salad might be more your speed.
Both the duck and chicken apple are fine examples of sausage and the kraut and mustards work well against the meaty counterpart. The potato salad is finely nuanced but a touch too creamy and a humongous portion that could feed the table.
As for dessert, you’ll order the apple strudel and be happy but what you really want is the brandied chocolate pudding which is both your childhood and your present all wrapped neatly in one screamingly delicious package.
Why go? Hangovers.
