It’s the first meal on a three week Indian adventure and The Monster is starved and irritable and excited. Two days of travel in coach (award tickets, never again on long flights) crammed like sardines and not getting into New Delhi until 5 AM is a recipe for Gremlins. We’ll see what Pickwicks has to offer The Monster who only eats breakfast so he can get to lunch sooner.
What he finds is breakfast at Claridges, a lovely colonial hotel, is a nice marriage of Western sensibilities with Eastern delights.
The room itself is banal (one step above the airport Sheraton in Des Moines) but the buffet spread and friendly service more than make up for it. One thing that does prove insufferable is the Christmas music played at a volume high enough for those in neighboring Pakistan to enjoy. Given the two countries history perhaps this is a form of psychological warfare. It’s working.
Be it fresh fruit, baked goods, hot entrees or a selection of freshly prepared dishes, Pickwicks can satisfy most everyone for a bite to eat to start the day. Huge dosas, paratha and Western style egg dishes made happy guests of most.
And with a lovely view of the gardens one can’t help but take a stroll post breakfast.
Why go? It’s the most important meal of the day. Even if it is the most boring.
