From the same owners as Hugo’s comes this oyster bar with its clean lines and seating around the oyster bar, huge windows looking onto the street or large share tables.  The Monster gets a Singapore Sling (what a great drink btw, doubles for the Monster fave Pimm’s Cup in a pinch) and peruses the menu.

Oyster on the half shell dominate the menu and there are nine types from Maine alone (Winter Point Selects – West Bath, Basket Island – Casco Bay, John’s River – South Bristol, Pemaquid – Damariscotta, Flying Point – Freeport, North Haven – North Haven, Glidden Pt. – Damariscotta, Pine Pt. – Scarborough, Norumbega – Damariscotta) along with another six selections from father along.   You can choose two of the ten accouterments to accompany your selections like the common red wine mignonette or the less common kim chee ice.

Other shellfish can be ordered on the halfshell (littleneck clams, stuffed Mahogany clams, lobster tails) and there is a selection of hot and cold dishes, sides and sweets.

The Monster’s call is the roasted jumbo winterpoint oysters, Korean BBQ, fried potato and the fried oyster bun, tartar, pickles.

The roasted oysters arrive first and they are wickedly good.  Showing off the Asian inspiration in their preparation, they demonstrate a nice taste of the sea while also showcasing the lovely slightly spicy broth and crunch from the fried potato.

The fried oyster bun is next up and is part open faced bao, part oyster roll, all delicious.  The pickle accompaniment adds a lovely salty finish.

The Monster finishes up his Singapore Sling and marvels at the food he’s eaten so far in Portland.  From the simple and hearty to the deftly prepared and gastronomic, he can see why this was hailed the foodiest little city in the country.

Why go?  Oysters.
