REVIEW: LIMO COCINA PERUANA & PISCO BAR (The Alpaca Edition)

With contemporary art on the walls, pulsing music and a forward thinking menu, Limo Cocina Peruana & Pisco Bar is a hotspot in Cusco overlooking the main square.

The Monsters stops in for dinner after a long day of traipsing up and down the narrow, steep streets.  He has quite an appetite and dives right in.

The damage tonight: deep fried causa roll with crab meat, smoked trout and avocado with citric aji limo honey and arugula salad; acevichado, crab meat, panko breaded shrimp and lettuce covered with fresh catch and bathed in leche de tigre and cilantro off the sushi menu; alpaca brochettes with golden fried huamantanga potatoes and Andean corn; Peruvian classic fresh catch a lo macho with seared scallops, shrimp and squid in rocoto, aj amarillo and aji mirasol sauce over confit Peruviantumbay potatoes and cilantro.

The bread course is eschewed in favor of the house chips with three dipping sauces.  The spongy yucca chips are terrific, the sauces each unique, one spicy, one mildly sweet, one tinged with garlic.

So alpaca.  Never again.  Not a red meat eater but had to give it a shot…gamey, tough, chewy, this is not a Monster favorite.  The Monster will forever wear his alpaca and not digest it.

The causa and acevicahdo bring the meal back into delightful territory.  It is from Peru that Nobu Matsuhisa took many of his cues and these dishes showcase the same deft pairing of sushi with Peruvian flare.

The main course reiterates why Peru is arguably one of the hottest culinary destinations in the world.  It is both utterly simple and full flavored.  The only complaint would be the dish should be served a touch hotter.

A fantastic day of eating has left The Monster full and happy.  A good place to be.

Why go?  If it’s good enough for Rene Redzepi and Ferran Adria…

Monster rating: 4/5 Monsters
