In what can only be deemed an orgy of eating, Culver City’s Lawrence of India recently had on offer a deal so tempting The Monster had to make a stop.  When last here the meal proved decidedly subpar but for $13.95 the place is literally giving away enough food to feed the Indian continent.

Each person gets homemade mixed pickles, a variety of chutneys and raiti.  And then a choice of vegetable samosas or onion bhaji.   A soup course takes its turn, dahl (pureed lentil) or mulkitani (spicy blend of vegetables).  The entrees feature a mix tandoori platter with chicken tandoori, chicken tikka, sheek kabab and shrimp tandoori.  But since that’s not enough food you also get to chose one vegetable of the day.  And from one of three types of rice, steamed basmanti, brown or rice pilau.  There will be bread, naan or roti.  And of course dessert.

As for Lawrence of India, it’s not much to look at, it’s TV’s featuring stringed together clips of Bollywood dance and music numbers.  Its servers are incredibly friendly and accommodating.  And the food proves to be much better this go around.

The soup is lacking in nuance and pronounced flavor but that is solved by adding in the pickled vegetables which teases out the lemon flavors.

The samosa is decent.  Not rewriting the rule book but does the trick.  Two courses down and The Monster is starting to reach maximum density.

The mix of flavors on the tandoori platter sings and wrapping it all up in some fresh, hot naan makes this a lunch leaving a smile on The Monster’s face.

As for dessert, day-glo orange sugar dipped treats.  Kissing cousins to a funnel cake, there is a slight sweetness but not overpowering.  Then when you bite in the sweet honey flavor in the middle is a bright surprise.

At the end of the meal The Monster asks for a wheel barrel to take him home.

Why go?  You last ate a week ago.
