Techno pumping, the concrete floored, high ceilinged industrial meets country chic space that is Local 1205 is a feast for the eyes and a treat for the taste buds. The long promised (and even longer delayed) neighbor to Abbot Kinney’s Other Room is an artisanal market cum restaurant with fresh salads, soups, melts and sandwiches you can nosh inside, on the patio or to-go.
The market portion of Local 1205 has much to admire though it appears the space can accommodate much more than the current offerings. The bare aesthetic may be a conscious choice but for the operation to survive and thrive it shall prove wise to maximize the square footage to better effect. Abbot Kinney real estate ain’t cheap.
You can take home cheeses, olives and meats (unless you are The Monster) along with hard to find and fantastic options like McClure’s pickles and chips along with wonderful pastas, sauces, dips and the like. It’s easy to ring up a hefty tab if one is imprudent (The Monster quickly learns his lesson).
As for the food offerings, it is always impossible to pass up a lobster roll (so sayeth The Monster). Both the mayo and the buttered version grace the menu. On this day the buttered version wins out. It’s pretty good, lots of fresh lobster and a nice crusty/buttered roll though the mayo classic is said to be even better. Next time.
Perhaps nostalgic for childhood The Monster also orders the tuna melt (it reminds him greatly of his grandmother). Wild caught yellowfin tuna salad, capers, celery, cucumber, baby spinach, ca’doro multi grain bread is the operation.
This could prove a costly decision as it is high risk/high reward. Delicious is the ultimate outcome. Crunchy, pressed bread and huge chunks of tuna. The capers inside add a delectable touch of saltiness.
The beautiful hipsters and eco-conscious moms of Abbot Kinney have already discovered the place in droves and service is friendly if not still a bit scattered.
But this early on Local 1205 seems to hit most of the right notes and fills a niche that Abbot Kinney most definitely needs.
Why go? You just bought a new scarf and it’s terribly warm out.
