On chi-chi Robertson is Pizzeria Il Fico a new entry in the Los Angeles Italian restaurant wars. Concrete floors, light wood tables, a long marble bar are its dominant features, it’s a casual but good looking spot.  Prices are a tad high perhaps, but this aims to be more than a pizzeria, an Italian spot to seek out and not one to just pop into while shopping.

As the lone diner on a lazy afternoon The Monster takes his time looking over the menu.  While there is a large selection of pizza on offer, there is also a lengthy list of starters, pasta and salads.

So while the Gnocchi ai Formaggi Gratinati (wood fired four cheese potato gnocchi) is tempting and the Involtino di Melanzana e Mortadella (rolled and wood-fired eggplant, mortadella and mozzarella in tomato sauce)  may be wonderful, The Monster opts for a pizza.

The call is the Il Mare Gamberetti, Zucchine, Rucola e Balsamico.  Mozzarella, sautéed shrimp, zucchini, arugula and lemon.  Kicking back with a little reading The Monster awaits his pie.

Out the window is John Wesley Jermyn, a fixture on Robertson for twenty years dancing on his roller skates.  Rumors abound he’s a secretive millionaire, while the reality is he’s a schizophrenic who refuses treatment.  Once a star athlete he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals before the onset of his disease.  It’s a poignant reminder to enjoy the blessings in our life.

When the pizza arrives it is thin, with a crisp crust, loaded with toppings.  There is altogether too much arugula.  It is in fact an arugula forest.  Does arugula taste that great that any dish needs this much of it?  And the pizza needs sauce.  It has none.  So this comes off as a salad on crust.  It’s decent but definitely not the pizza The Monster had in mind.  Perhaps this is a case of ordering wrong, but a place charging these tariffs ($18 for the pizza) with pizzeria in the name should be doing better.

With his daily intake of greens fulfilled The Monster strolls down Robertson and thinks perhaps he’ll order a pizza for dinner.

Why go?  You love salad.
